Charlie Arturaola, the IWSC Wine Communicator of 2012, is legendary in culinary and oenological circles. A remarkably charismatic wine expert, Charlie approaches his life's passion with expert knowledge and contagious enthusiasm. His unique presentations are in constant demand around the world.
Arturaola is the president of the Miami based Grappolo Blu Inc. He lectures, conducts educational tastings, acts as an expert appraiser for insurance companies, consults with foreign importers and mentors new members of the wine community. His fluency in five languages has taken him from Brazil to Bordeaux and from Montefalco to Mexico, allowing him to deliver his passion in Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and English.
In 2010, Arturaola starred in “El Camino del Vino,” a fictionalized documentary. During the Masters of Food and Wine in Mendoza, he loses his palate, and seeks counsel from various people in the Mendoza wine business. He begins with Michel Rolland and proceeds on a funny and touching journey to 6 wineries in Mendoza, eventually returning to his birthplace, Montevideo, Uruguay. “El Camino del Vino” won the FIPRESCI award at the Mar del Plata Film Festival. The film was selected for the prestigious Kino Kulinarische program at Berlinale, at the newly established Transatlantyk Film Fest as well as at Enologica 32 in Montefalco,Umbria and film festivals in Copenhagen, Moscow, and San Sebastian. The US premiere was at the Napa Valley Film Festival. Arturaola is currently working on his second movie, a comedy, to be call The Duel of Wine.
Charlie has been a featured sommelier and educator at many of the greatest wine festivals: Food & Wine Magazine's Aspen Food & Wine Classic, The New York Wine Spectator Weekend, Boston Wine Expo, Masters of Food and Wine in São Paulo, Mendoza and Buenos Aires and Carmel, CA. Gourmet & Golf in Punta Mita, Mexico, the Jackson Hole Wine Auction and the Telluride Wine and Food Festival. He is also in demand for trade events and has conducted seminars at Vinitaly, VinExpo, Fenavin, Albacete University, Spain, the Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux in Brazil, and Enologica 32,Umbria,Italy.
Arturaola also speaks on behalf of regional consorzios and institutions, including the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, the Tutela del Morellino di Scansano, the Consorzio del Chianti Classico, the SimplyItaly Tour, the Denominacao de Origen do Vinho Verde,Portugal. Internationally Charlie has been named Chevalier by the Ordre des Coteaux des Champagnes, and has represented L'Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux as an Formateur in Latin America.
As an educator, Arturaola has been honored as a "Distinguish Visiting Sommelier" at Johnson & Wales University in Miami and also taught at Lynn University.
Charlie serves as a judge for the American Fine Wine Competition, the Golden Glass Awards, the International Wine and Spirit Challenge and Tempranillo al mundo in Spain.
Before founding Grappolo Blu, Arturaola was the wine director at the legendary Boca Raton Resort & Club, the boutique Marco Beach Resort and the Myriad Restaurant Group from NYC.
