With more than 40 years involvement in the industry he can be regarded as one of the stalwarts of the South African wine industry. After spending 30 years at KWV, with 10 years as Production Director, he changed to a training career at different levels of the wine industry. After chairing the Department of Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch, he founded a training company focusing on the empowerment of cellar workers.
He is a taster at various local and international wine competitions and industry official institutions, and has developed and presented contact and internet wine evaluation courses. As representative, delegate or examiner he served the industry on different local and international professional and institutional organisations. As a popular scientific writer he is a regular columnist of wine industry magazines.
