The Wine Society

Freddy Bulmer is a seasoned professional in the wine industry, currently serving as the Buyer for The Wine Society, one of the UK’s most esteemed wine businesses. With over a decade of experience in the field, Freddy is responsible for curating the Society’s portfolio of wines from Australia, New Zealand, Austria, and Eastern Europe, as well as overseeing the selection of craft beers and ciders.

Freddy's journey in the wine world began unexpectedly when he took up a job at a wine bar as an 18-year-old, sparking his curiosity about the nuances of different wines. His passion for the industry led him to pursue an apprenticeship at an independent wine merchant in North Yorkshire in 2011, laying the foundation for his career. In 2013, he joined The Wine Society, where he has remained ever since, steadily climbing the ranks from Member Services Wine Adviser to his current role as Buyer.

Throughout his tenure at The Wine Society, Freddy has made significant contributions to the company's success, playing a pivotal role in new product creation, development, and successful launches and campaigns. A skilled negotiator, he values the importance of fostering strong supplier relationships, a belief reflected in his VBA Complex Negotiations certificate. Freddy's dedication to excellence is further evidenced by his completion of the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits, demonstrating his comprehensive understanding of the industry.

In addition to his role as a wine buyer, Freddy is also an experienced wine judge and presenter, frequently lending his expertise to prestigious wine competitions such as the IWSC. Since April 2022, he has expanded his involvement in the wine world with the establishment of his own company, focusing on wine judging, presenting, and communicating. Specializing in lesser-known wines from off the beaten track, Freddy continues to champion diversity and innovation in the wine industry.
