Marie Cheong-Thong has been regularly judging for the last 15 years in the UK, Europe and the Far East in OIV competitions (Mondial and Concours), at the International Wine Challenge as well as the IWSC.
She is a WSET certified educator and freelance writer and educator. As a food and beverage researcher, she has visited and interviewed wineries, distilleries, breweries and eateries in Australia, Europe, UK, Japan, South Africa, South America, USA and the Far East. She was also awarded a competitive scholarship by Genuine Education Network S.r.l. in 2015 to research washoku (Japanese cuisine), sake making and related culture in Mie Prefecture, Japan. She speaks at food festivals such as The Milan Expo, York Food Festival and Abergavenny Food Festival, and also hosts and organises “one of a kind” wine/sake/culinary trips around the world.
She is currently a Board Director of British Sake Association, and a member of both the Circle of Wine Writers and the Association of Wine Educators. She is also a member of the Japanese Culinary Academy (UK).
She was educated at The Cheltenham Ladies College and Imperial College London, trained at Le Cordon Bleu, and has WSET qualifications in Wine and Spirits as well as Sake. She also gained her Educator’s certificate at the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Academy (Japan) and has the Diploma of the BNIA Academy (Armagnac).
