Mauricio González Gordon, 2012 IWSC President
Mauricio González Gordon, the IWSC President for 2012 and Chairman of González Byass S.A., has been raised in the drinks industry. From an early age he was close to his family business and is now part of the fifth generation of González’ who have been involved in running the company.
González Gordon’s background in economics and business administration stood him in good stead for his role at the helm of the business. A brief spell working away from the family concern with General Motors and AT&T gave him a broad vision of the world outside drinks and upon returning to González Byass he spent time at the company’s London subsidiary. Two years later he returned to Jerez as Financial Director, from where he rose to the position of General Manager, before joining the board in 1998

Since 2006 González Gordon has been Chairman of González Byass S.A. and in this role he has spearheaded diversification of the business’ interests, expanding from its roots in Sherry and Brandy de Jerez into a premium wine and spirits producer and brand owner. “Today our company is about Spanish premium wines and spirits from some of the top Denominations of Origin in Spain,” he comments, “and whilst we are committed to the foundation of González Byass going forward we have sought out new avenues and burgeoning markets in order to secure our interests for the next generation.”

Consistency and constancy are key drivers for Mauricio González Gordon, an ethos passed down to him by the previous generations of his family, especially when it comes to quality, and this is why he is proud to accept the Presidency of The International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2012. “It is a great honour to be appointed President, not least because I am in auspicious company, but also because the IWSC is the benchmark for quality on an international scale, a factor that is very close to my heart as at González Byass we strive continuously to do exactly the same with our products and brands in the categories in which we operate,” says González Gordon. “Having won the trophy for Winemaker of the year in 2010 I know how important these accolades are. Commercially, it really makes a difference to have that kind of endorsement behind your brands, precisely because buyers and press around the world understand and value the quality standards set by the IWSC.”
