The IWSC is delighted to announce Mia Meng Zhang as the winner of the 2026 Emerging Talent in Wine Hospitality Award, celebrating one of the most innovative new voices shaping wine service, guest experience and cultural engagement in Beijing.

Mia stood out for her originality, cross-cultural approach, and the speed at which she has made a meaningful impact within the city’s hospitality scene. This year’s judging panel, Nina Basset (Gérard Basset Foundation), Christelle Guibert (IWSC Director) and Maria Boumpa (Sommelier & Wine Consultant), praised the diversity and quality of entries, with Mia’s energy, vision, and execution placing her firmly at the forefront.

A new voice in Beijing hospitality

In 2025, Mia transitioned from wine education, judging and regional promotion into hands-on hospitality, co-founding GUI TEMPLE x Petit Mont Wine & Coffee Bar, a hybrid venue tucked beneath Beijing’s historic Bell Tower. Her mission was simple: create a 'living room for curious drinkers,' a space where Chinese wine could be explored without pretension.

"Mia is incredibly innovative and dynamic. Her ideas are fresh, engaging and delivered with real confidence." Nina Basset

Creativity at the heart of hospitality

As a WSET Diploma holder and Certified Educator, Mia combines technical expertise with an approachable style. At GUI TEMPLE x Petit Mont, her initiatives include:

  • A 90% Chinese wine-focused menu championing local producers

  • Cross-cultural tasting events and collaborations

  • Wine-led cocktail creation with top wineries

  • Multi-sensory experiences and cultural programming

Within six months of opening, the venue won Time Out Beijing’s Best New Bar Award 2025, reflecting both her creativity and execution.

"Her creativity behind the bar is exceptional. She approaches wine with originality and a modern sensibility." - Christelle Guibert

Championing Chinese wine

Mia’s work elevates Chinese wine in everyday drinking culture, pairing education with hospitality. Partnerships with wineries such as Tiansai Vineyard and collaborations with cultural organisations bring regional wines and stories to a wider audience.

"She is refreshing, innovative and deeply committed to giving more to the community. Her work makes Chinese wine visible and exciting." - Maria Boumpa

Rapid impact and future potential

Although new to hospitality, Mia has already co-founded a thriving bar, built a loyal guest community, launched collaborations, and developed innovative wine experiences. Upcoming projects include a 'Wine in Context' cultural series, new product collaborations, and a digital storytelling initiative documenting Chinese wineries.

After finding out she had won the award, Mia shared: "A huge thank you to the judging panel, I’m incredibly proud to champion Chinese wine in every way. This award isn't just mine - it belongs to everyone who took a chance on Chinese wine without pretension".
