IWSC Judge Julian Brind MW dies

"The IWSC were saddened to learn that Julian Brind MW, had passed away following a heart attack on Sunday 19th December.

Julian was a long standing and valued supporter of the IWSC both as a Chair judge and member of the Technical and Judging Committee for many years.

He had been an active member of the trade since 1964 when he signed up as a Management Trainee with Brown and Pank Wine & Spirit Co of Watney Mann Breweries.  Julian passed the Master of Wine exam in 1970 and in 1971 joined Waitrose as Central Buyer, where he remained for the rest of his career, becoming Head of Buying Wines, Spirits Beers and Soft Drinks.

Julian had also been active in the academic side of the industry, and in his career had acted as Chair of the MW Panel of Examiners, Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine, Ombudsman to the Circle of Wine Writers and in 2002 was elected President of the Wine & Spirit Association. He was Chair if the Board of Trustees for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and also chaired the English Wine Awards.

Julian will be sadly missed by many.
