Altos Planos awarded IWSC’s 2023 Agave Producer Trophy

We’re delighted to award Altos Planos the IWSC 2023 Agave Producer Trophy, sponsored by Spirits Kiosk.

Altos Planos launched its first spirits brand, Mijenta Tequila, in September 2020, and officially released its second, Tres Tribus Mezcal, in 2023. From the outset, Altos Planos has been committed to producing high-quality agave spirits with celebrated master distillers who bring a meticulous, scientific approach to traditional craft.

Our judges believe that Altos are doing an incredible job at making tequila and mezcal approachable to new customers as well as long-standing aficionados. Their storytelling is engaging and excites their customers. They are able to communicate effectively without compromising on intricate details. But in addition to making great products, the company has from inception been committed to having a positive impact on society. With a deep commitment to sustainability and giving back to local communities, Altos’ goal has been to demonstrate that it is possible to craft award-winning spirits in a responsible manner in order to inspire other larger companies to join them.

This sustainable responsibility really wowed our judges. From all packaging elements being eco-friendly, to never using pesticides or herbicides in their harvesting, and partnerships with like-minded companies to amplify their impact. One of the many partnerships is with Women’s Earth Alliance’s in Mexico, uplifting women’s leadership, entrepreneurship, and environmental impact within the agriculture sector. Through their many efforts, they have been a certified B Corporation since August 2022, and were the first agave spirits producer to earn this accolade, as well as being a fully carbon neutral company. Our judges were impressed that Altos were able to be the first to achieve this certification, but also that they have been able to maintain it. It really showed our judges that as a brand they really hold themselves accountable for everything they do within their distillery, making them very worthy winners of this trophy.
